‘The tiniest and most controversial possum on earth, the Leadbeater’s Possum, is going extinct. The possum and the forest in which it lives has been IUCN red-listed and rated ‘critically endangered’ on account of the threat of logging and fires. The Leadbeater’s Possums last population stronghold are the Mountain Ash forests of the Central Highlands, it’s lowland population in Yellingbo has only 36 animals surviving, sadly nest boxes didn’t work and it’s been deemed functionally extinct. The possum is found nowhere else on the planet and has come up against the giant Japanese paper company Nippon Paper and its pulp log contracts to make its signature paper product Reflex White.’ - Great Forest National Park.
